2011
Dried leaves of
Acmena acuminatissima
(Myrtaceae) and
Calliandra portoricensis
(Fabaceae), dried stems of
Gomphostemma javanicum
(Lamiaceae),
Eucalyptus globulus
(Myrtaceae)
, Cestrum calysinum
(Solanaceae) and dried herb of
Strobilanthes
involucrata
(Acanthaceae) were extracted by macera
tion technique using ethanol 80% as
solvent. The extracts were tested for antimicrobial activity against
Staphylococcus
aureus, Escherichia coli
and
Candida albicans
using Agar Dilution Method at
concentrations of 62,5
μ
g/ml; 125
μ
g/ml; 250
μ
g/ml; 500
μ
g/mland 1000
μ
g/ml. The
antimicrobial activity of the extract is expressed as Minimum Inhibitory Concentration
(MIC). The result showed that
the ethanol 80% leaf extract of
Acmena
acuminatissima
is the most active against
Staphylococcus aureus
,
Escherichia coli
and
Candida albicans
with MIC values of 500
μ
g/ml. The ethanol 80% stem extract
of
Eucalyptus globulus
is active against
Staphylococcus aureus
,
Escherichia coli
and
Candida albicans
with MIC values of 1000
μ
g/ml. While the ethano
l 80% leaf extract
of
Calliandra portoricensis
, ethanol 80% stem extract of
Gomphostemma javanicum
and
Cestrum calysinum
and the ethanol 80% herb extract of
Strobilanthes involucrata
showed no antimicrobial activity against th
e tested microbes. Skrining for chemical
compound groups using Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) showed the presence of
terpenoid, polifenol and antrak
uinon in the plant extract.
