AI-Supported Decision-Making Process in Multidomain Military Operations

2021
Modern military operations are conducted in a dynamically changing environment, which necessitates that huge volumes of data are analyzed instantaneously. Due to advances in information and communication technology (ICT), decision-makers can be supported in the process of accessing and making use of the vast amounts of data and information. However, due to the instantly available large amounts of data, they are not able to make optimal choices. Technology once again helps providing several solutions to aid decision-makers in making timely and well thought decisions. The operational environment is filled with various devices able to collect, analyze and deliver data in a split of a second. They are driven by powerful AI engines, use modern simulation software, and use machine learning algorithms. It seems that the commanders and their staffs receive the right and ultimate solutions. However, all that technology is devoid of a social dimension, and their cold analysis is deprived of objectivity and humanity that are essential in making decisions in the modern operations. The authors will investigate the usefulness and risks of this type of decision support in light of modern and demanding military operations.
