Determination of visual impairment associated with alcohol consumption.

In this study, researchers investigatedalcohol drinking status and the association betweendrinking patterns and visual impairment in an adultpopulation in Northern China. In conclusion, it wasreported that high levels of alcohol consumption aredeleterious to eye health. However, there are somepoints that we would like to address about this study.First, the authors stated that heavy alcohol intakewas significantly associated with an increased risk ofcorneal diseases when compared with abstainers. Inthe literature, there have been many studies evaluat-ing the relationship between drinking patterns andvarious corneal diseases. For instance, Thomas andcolleagues found a significant relationship betweenalcohol consumption and arcus senilis.
