Adaptive Algorithm for Automated Undervoltage Protection of Industrial Power Districts with Distributed Generation Facilities

2019
The research team has analyzed the requirements of the effective standards applicable to the automated undervoltage protection (AUVP) devices. The paper generalizes design approaches to algorithmizing and configuring the AUVP devices. It summarizes the undervoltage-related processes in industrial power districts that cause the AUVP system in use to fail to prevent voltage collapse in certain circuitries and under certain parameters. It is shown that AUVP performance can be improved by adopting an adaptive algorithm that can be used not only for voltage control, but also for monitoring the circuitry and parameters in the grid adjacent to the AUVP site. It is also shown that control inputs (CI) must be configured on the basis of preliminary simulation of electrical parameters for different circuitries and parametric configurations. The paper proves it advisable to implement preventive AUVP-related CI to minimize possible reactive power deficits. Efficient use of generator sets within distributed-generation (DG) facilities is proven feasible when applying AUVP-related CI. The paper presents the structural diagram of an AUVP system that uses and adaptive algorithm and can prevent voltage collapse in industrial power districts with DG facilities
