FACTORS RELATED TO THE OCCURRENCE OF PULMONARY TUBERCULOSIS RECURRENCE IN GARUT, INDONESIA: A CASE CONTROL STUDY

Tuberculosis is a disease that remains a health problem in the world. The occurrence of recurrence causes an increase in tuberculosis cases. Factors related to the recurrence include age, gender, education, smoking habits, diabetes mellitus (DM) comorbidities, and treatment-seeking behavior. This study aimed to analyze the factors related to pulmonary tuberculosis recurrence in Garut, Indonesia. The design of this research used a case-control study. The case group was tuberculosis patients who experienced recurrence and received treatment at a health center in the District of Garut. The control group was the new tuberculosis patients who did not experience recurrence and received treatment at the same health center as the case group. The total population sampling technique was applied. The number of samples was 180 people consisting of 60 for the case group and 120 for the control group. The questionnaires were used in this study, including age, gender, education, smoking habits, DM comorbidities, and treatments seeking behavior. Data were analyzed using descriptive and non-parametric analyses using chi-square. The results showed that there were the significant relationships between recurrence of pulmonary tuberculosis with age (OR = 3,571) CI (1,654-7,712), education (OR = 2,637) CI (1,374-5,063), DM comorbidities (OR = 5,381) CI (1,345-9,108), and treatments seeking behavior (OR = 2,931) CI (1,453-5,91). The results also showed that there were no associations between pulmonary tuberculosis recurrence with gender and smoking habits. The results of this research can be used as a consideration in developing efforts and interventions in preventing and overcoming the recurrence of pulmonary tuberculosis.
