Tratamiento del Cáncer: ¿Un Futuro Promisorio?

La Oncologia se halla entre las especialidades medicas con mayor nivel de actualizacion, debido a la constante evolucion de los conocimientos y a la aplicacion casi inmediata de los resultados de la investigacion. El cancer, al ser frecuente e impactar emocionalmente a los pacientes y su entorno, interesa a todos y por ello goza de prioridad. Hoy los cientificos tienen delante las potencialidades de la ciencia y del saber acumulado. Las posibilidades actuales para el control de los tumores dan la idea de como poder avanzar; asi, ano tras ano los tratamientos se optimizan. Para muchos galenos el cancer ha comenzado a considerase una enfermedad incurable en etapas avanzadas, pero controlable. Tras la aplicacion de la inmunoterapia, los pacientes viven mucho mas tiempo, aun con metastasis, lo cual hace pensar que sera posible lograr que la enfermedad se convierta en un proceso cronico sobre el cual se pueda accionar mediante el sistema inmune. Los logros alcanzados han permitido llevar nuevas ofertas terapeuticas a un mayor numero de pacientes, que hasta hace poco no tenian mas opciones. Muchos cientificos ya reclaman la necesidad de actualizar las estadisticas de supervivencia del paciente con cancer. Con el objetivo de informar sobre los logros de las terapias actuales contra el cancer, se realiza la presente revision, deseando que la misma contribuya a romper un gran mito: hoy cancer no es necesariamente igual a muerte. Summary Oncology is among the medical specialties with the highest level of updating, due to the constant evolution of knowledge and the almost immediate application of the results of research. Cancer, being frequent and emotionally impacting patients and their environment, is of interest to all and therefore enjoys priority. Today, scientists have the potential of science and accumulated knowledge. The current possibilities for the control of tumors give the idea of how to progress, so year after year treatments are optimized. For many physicians, cancer has begun to be considered an incurable disease in advanced stages, but controllable. After the application of immunotherapy, patients live much longer, even with metastases, which suggests that it will be possible to make the disease become a chronic process that can be treated through the immune system. The achievements have allowed to bring new therapeutic offers to a greater number of patients, who until recently would have no other options. Many scientists already claim the need to update the cancer patient's survival statistics. Informing day by day about the achievements in this context would contribute to definitely break, the biggest of all myths: today cancer is not necessarily equal to death.
