Abstract 20156: Effects of Different Temperature Profiles During Emergency Cardiopulmonary Bypass Resuscitation on Reperfusion Physiology in Rats

Introduction: Emergency cardiopulmonary bypass (ECPB) for resuscitation from prolonged cardiac arrest (CA) allows temperature control during and after resuscitation. We assessed effects of different reperfusion temperatures during ECPB on physiologic parameters after 10 min ventricular fibrillation (VF) CA in rats. Methods: 24 Rats (Sprague-Dawley, male, 450 g) were randomized to 3 reperfusion temperatures (mild hypothermic MH, 33°C; deep hypothermic DH, initial 27°C and rewarming to 33°C after 15 min; normothermic NT, 37°C) following 10 minutes of VF CA. CPB flow rate and gas flow was identical between groups. Blood samples were taken before the induction of CA, 5 and 15 min after weaning from CPB. Data are presented as median and interquartile range. Differences between groups were calculated with the Kruskal-Wallis-Test. Results: Detailed results are listed in Table 1 below. DH caused more profound acidosis mainly due to hypercarbia. Higher gas flow rates to avoid hypercarbia during use of deep hypothermic ECPB will be tested in future studies.
