AUBURN POSTS ROAD TEST RESULTS

2002
The first phase of field tests at the National Center for Asphalt Technology suggest that quality control of construction practices will yield significant improvements in pavement longevity. With the test track set up at Auburn University in Alabama, 15 years' worth of wear can be carried out in two. Aggregates tested in the 46 200-ft.-long sections included limestone-rich mixes, which tended to result in slicker surfaces over time. Indiana researchers used the track to compare lab results with field tests and found close correlations. Superpave's coarse mix did not out-perform the fine mix in terms of rut resistance. Still being examined is stone matrix asphalt and tests that are intended to reduce traffic noise. Nine states funded the track and are sharing the results of their test sections. Each week's results are posted at www.pavetrack.com. The test also showed that smooth roads reduced fuel consumption by 5% and wear and tear on equipment and fatigue for drivers.
