Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) was first described in 1966. It has been shown to outperform even vigorous best medical therapy for both weight loss and type 2 diabetes remission. However, it is a complex procedure with a significant learning curve. The anastomosis may be created with the use of stapling devices or hand sewn with equivalent results. In this chapter we discuss the different operative techniques for performing gastric bypass surgery, as well as associated complications.
