Smart Plug using in patients with dry eye

Objective The efficacy of the Smart Plug for treatment of dry eye syndrome（DES） was evaluated.Methods Forty-one eyes with subjective symptoms of dry eye in addition to a tear film breakup time（TBUT） 10 seconds,5-min Schirmer I test（SIT） showing less than 5 mm strip wetting and evidence of ocular surface damage on fluorescein staining were included.Smart plug was inserted in the treated eyes.Pre-and post-treatment evaluations included subjective symptom scoring,TBUT,SIT,fluorescein staining and quality of life（measured with ocular surface disease index,OSDI）.Results After 2 week of treatment,the average severity of dryness,asthenopia,grittiness,burning,stinging,and light sensitivity（P〈0.05） reduced significantly.The clinical signs improved significantly（P〈0.05）.The scores of mean OSDI-symptoms,functions and environmental stimuli,measuring quality of life,improved significantly（P〈0.05）.Conclusion The results show that Smart plug insertion can reduce symptoms and clinical signs of DES significantly and improved the patients＇quality of life.
