Declaration, which provides ethical principles for medical
research involving human subjects, have become part of the
everyday vocabulary of physicians throughout the world.
In these sad times of escalating conflict we are increasingly
grateful for the declarations of Tokyo, which provides
'guidelines for physicians concerning torture and other cruel,
inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment in relation
to detention and imprisonment', and Malta, which describes
