Beamforming of Linear Antenna Array Using Modified PSO Algorithm

A new approach in beamforming by the use of a modified algorithm, called Particle Swarm Optimization-Least Mean Square (PSOLMS) algorithm, is proposed here for beam steering and null positioning applications of Linear Antenna Arrays (LAAs). This paper aims to analyze the performance of the proposed PSOLMS algorithm in comparison to PSO and the conventional methods such as LMS, Constant Modulus Algorithm (CMA) used in beamforming of antenna arrays. The amplitude and phase excitations of the weight coefficients are optimized using the proposed algorithm, and the analysis has been carried out for a 16 element LAA. The simulated results using MATLAB shows that the side lobe levels (SLL) can be reduced with lower amplitude excitations and provides considerable enhancements as compared to the conventional methods.
