The Coup That Never Was

In hindsight, the 1991 coup attempt, alleged or real, was just an episode in the game of Kremlin power politics. Although it resulted in the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the wild economic chaos of the 1990s, little, if any, progress has been made in democratic political reform.
