Statistical prediction of planar power consumption distribution in digital system layout/PCB

In this paper, a statistical approach is proposed for estimation of power consumption distribution in the layout/PCB of digital systems. The power spectrum density for a buffer is derived based on its input stochastic switching. Alpha-power law model for short channel MOSFET is used for analytic derivations. In addition, the parasitic of power distribution network (PDN) is considered in power estimation on main power supply of the system. Verification of the method is done by applying it on a designed and implemented digital board. Power consumption map can be generated using proposed distribution and be used in EMI analysis of the system.
