High intensity focused ultrasound for treatment of uterine leiomyoma

2010
Objective To investigate the effects of high intensity focused ultrasound(HIFU)for uterine leiomyoma(ULMM) which were examined by MRI and followed up by ultrasound. Methods Sixty cases of ULMM were treated with HIFU which were studied by MRI of T1WI and T2WI imagine and were followed up by ultrasound 1,3,6 and 12 months after HIFU to compare the diamenters of the ULMM. Results After HIFU the ULMM became coaggulatire necrosis as showed on MRI by low or higher image of T2WI and lower image of T1WI. Ultrasound follow-up showed that the tumor began to shrink one month after HIFU ablation and the regression of ULMM was obvious three months after HIFU (P<0.05). Conclusions MRI examination and ultrasound follow-up confirm that the HIFU has an obvious effect on ULMM. Key words: High intensity focused ultrasound ;  Uterine leiomyoma ;  MRI ;  Follow-up ;
