Musculoskeletal Complaints in Male and Female Instrumental Musicians

2017
Abstract Musculoskeletal illnesses are a major cause of disease burden worldwide. They are the main cause of years lived with disability. The prevalence of musculoskeletal complaints is higher among females compared to males. This gender difference is present in both the general and the working population. The prevalence of musculoskeletal complaints among musicians is higher compared with the general working population. In addition, the number of complaints and the impact on functioning is rated as more severe by musicians. Female musicians report a higher prevalence of musculoskeletal complaints, especially in the regions which are already most affected among musicians—the neck, upper back, and shoulders. Several other factors related to musculoskeletal complaints in musicians are discussed. Practical guidelines for health care providers as well as preventive and therapeutic options are discussed.
