Analysis and Evaluation of Methods for Calibrating Internal Angle of SGC

Based on influence of calibrating internal angle of Superpave Gyratory Compactor (SGC) on indexes of mixture volume, methods for measuring and calibrating internal angle of SGC commonly use are introduced and evaluated based on measured data. It is concluded that: 1) extrapolation method is not applicable to all brands of SGCs, measurement difference between extrapolation and full-height methods is related to brands and models; 2) stiffness of the mixture used during the internal angle measurement may have an effect on the resulting angle, so the hot mix simulation (HMS) can be used in conjunction with the dynamic angle validation (DAV) kit; and 3) measurement device may also affect the resultinig internal angle, the identity of resulting internal angles from RAM and DAV need further research. The 30 internal angle measurements of the Pine AFGIC compactor using DAV with HMS indicate that the precision can satisfy the need of tests.
