APPLICATION OF TRUNKED RADIO IS A TRANSIT ENVIRONMENT

The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) has completed deployment of an 800 megahertz trunked radio system. The system furnishes radio coverage for the trackway and facilities along 85 miles of the BART track. Above and below ground equipment installations provide superior coverage and performance when compared to conventional radio channels the trunked system replaced. The number of BART radio users has increased by virtue of the trunked radio system capacity. User acceptance of the radio equipment is high and systemwide response time to resolve problems has been reduced. The maintenance of the trunked radio system is comparable to the conventional system.
