REFLECTING ON STATION DESIGN

Eighteen years have passed since birth of the JRs. During this period, many superannuated stations have been refurbished to improve their functions and strengthen the management bases. The public response to these new stations, frankly speaking, was mixed. In recent years, a movement to reassess station design has gained momentum. In the hundred thirty some years since the first train started running in 1872 in Japan between Shimbashi and Yokohama, what kind of stations have been built? And since the inauguration of JRs in 1987, what kind of stations have the JRs developed? This article introduces JR East's initiatives in station building.
