Traffic Measure with Cooperative System Utilizing Portable Traffic Detector And Mobile LED Variable Message Signboard
2012
On expressways in urban area in Japan, traffic congestion occur frequently through the year, The authors have installed traffic detectors approximately every 2km in order to detect traffic congestion automatically. On the other hand, in rural areas , traffic congestion on expressways occur only in heavy traffic season such as winter and summer holiday, and most sections in the rural area do not have many traffic detectors for the reason of cost performance. Traffic congestion measure by providing information warning automatic slow down and adjusting traffic flow at bottlenecks such as sag have been implemented in urban area; however, it has not been conducted in rural area. Therefore, the authors developed portable traffic detector utilizing Doppler Effect by microwave and established a cooperative system with mobile variable message signboard using mobile telephone communication. Accordingly, the authors developed and examined a reasonable traffic congestion measure for rural expressways. In this report, the authors will present the result of traffic congestion measure with this cooperative system and its further possibility as a traffic accident measure that warns of excess speeding.
