Health Effects of E-Cigarettes and Other Vaping Devices on Non-users

2021
Although electronic cigarettes and other vaping devices are an emerging exposure, accumulating evidence suggests that secondhand exposure to their emissions is not benign. Secondhand exposures may be more problematic in developing fetuses and growing children, with potentially life-long effects. Still, many of the potential long-term risks of secondhand exposure, such as cardiovascular disease and malignancy, remain unknown, due to the frequently long lag time necessary to develop such complications. In this chapter, we discuss the science behind secondhand exposures to electronic cigarettes and other vaping devices, groups experiencing secondhand exposure, effects on various organ systems, regulations protecting non-users, non-inhalational exposures, and the potential for thirdhand exposure.
