CRRM for RAT selection in the UMTS and WiMAX optimisation

2010
The next generation of wireless systems (NGWS) will allow the integration of multiple radio access technologies (RATs). This integration will enable that much functionalities that were specific to each RAT to be jointly processed, increasing the cooperation degree. This work focuses on radio resource management (RRM) for NGWS, where a new RRM architecture is introduced. In this architecture, the RRM techniques are divided between common radio resource management (CRRM) and local radio resource management (LRRM). The enhancements achieved with the introduction of a new architecture are evaluated with a CRRM policy which tries to minimize the multi-user interference, increase capacity and coverage. The policy is implemented using a path loss algorithm for the admission control (AC) and vertical handover (VHO) in a heterogeneous wireless scenario composed with UMTS and WiMAX technologies. Simulations show that with the implemented algorithm, possible in the context of the proposed RRM architecture, the multi-user interference decreases which results in the increase of system radio capacity and coverage.
