Psychopathic traits in children and youth: The state-of-the-art after 30 years of research

2020
Abstract The study of psychopathic traits in children and youth vastly increased after Forth, Hart, and Hare published a first paper on the topic in 1990. This state-of-the-art review about psychopathic traits in children and youth focuses on the: (a) reflection on the construct, while approaching historical, conceptual, ethical and legal issues; (b) etiological theories most referred in the literature, highlighting the importance of considering an integrative etiological perspective; (c) assessment issues, including the existent assessment measures; and (d) treatment needs and available treatment efforts. By discussing the state-of-the-art on the topic of psychopathic traits in children and youth, we will present possible avenues for research and for preventive and intervention effective efforts.
