Smaller Class Room Engagement using Appropriate Seating Arrangements

2019
Classroom engagement is a challenging task in a college environment. Moreover, a key factor for student success in college is how the students are engaged in the classroom. A professor's attention towards the students also varies depending on the class size. This paper investigates the students' attention and engagement level in smaller classroom sizes, and correlates this with different student seating arrangements, types of student activities, and various attributes of the instructor's delivery. These observations show correlates of class size in determining the student's attention in the class. Several attributes are used as a measuring tool, using computer vision techniques for measurement and evaluation purpose. The results show interesting correlations between student engagement, classroom size and arrangement, and attributes of the instructor's delivery.
