Infantile pyloric stenosis

2001
mon gastrointestinal abnormalities presenting in the first 6 months of life. Although the definitive treatment for this condition is surgical pyloromyotomy, it is important to realise that pyloric stenosis is a medical and not a surgical emergency. Effective pre-operative rehydration and correction of acid/base abnormalities is the primary treatment goal and is the main factor contributing to the present-day low operative mortality. Recent studies quote a mortality of less than 0.3% compared with that of 10% in the early years of the 20th century.
