A Preliminary Study on Electricity Generation Performance of Mixed Bacteria and Single Bacterium Microbial Fuel Cell

2013
A microbial fuel cell(MFC)was fabricated with the original strains from anaerobic sludge,840 h later, the maximum power density reached 1900 mW·m-2.Then an electricity generation bacterium was isolated from anode for which the cells were spherical and the growth pattern was facultative anaerobic. The strain was identified belong to Staphylococcus and was named as Staphylococcus NJUST-1.Then a single bacterium MFC was made using Staphylococcus NJUST-1,and its stable maximum power density reached 520 mW·m-2,much lower than that of the mixed bacteria MFC,and the polarization curve showed that the voltage rapidly declined when the current density reached 0.18 mA·cm-2,which indicated that the electricity generation performance of NJUST-1 was hampered at a higher current.Metabolizing 1.0 g·L-1 glucose for 5~15 h,the external voltage still maintained at a high level, but significantly reduced when the glucose concentration was lower than 0.1 g·L-1,and it could be detected yet with the glucose concentration approaching zero.
