Opportunistic discovery scheme for device-to-device communication

2017
Device-to-device (D2D) communication allows mobile devices to directly communicate with each other without infrastructures. It is considered as a promising solution to improve communication performance such as spectral efficiency and network capacity of the fifth generation (5G) wireless communication systems as well as LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) systems. It generally requires D2D discovery and data communication which are considered as the fundamental procedures of D2D communication, in which D2D discovery should precede direct communication. However, most D2D studies have focused on the resource management such as resource allocation, power control, and mode selection for efficient direct communication assuming that the D2D discovery has been done. In this paper, we propose novel opportunistic discovery scheme to reduce power consumption and signaling overhead in both centralized and distributed D2D systems by introducing a new type of resource structure in terms of D2D discovery The mathematical analysis based on both Poisson point process (PPP) and Markov chain is provided afterwards. In addition, we present simulation result to evaluate our proposed discovery scheme. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.
