Abstract Categories such as ‘extra-fine with respect to peas are contractual stipulations of particle sizes called thinnesses, are often specified by inequalities or clauses. The decision whether these clauses are conformed to is not obvious once the stipulated control device is no larger available, raising a computer problem: transfer of a soft procedure from a hardware to another one. This problem is solved by a suitable graphic representation provided with a specific decision procedure: ‘the rectangle rule’.
