BSA-Embedded Carbonate Apatite Enhances Chemotherapeutic Effect of Paclitaxel in vitro and in vivo

2019
Among the strategies for enhanced pharmacokinetics and also pharmacodynamics of nano-formualtions is introduction of biocompatible materials to improve the capacity of the final product. With the aim to tackle drug loading and ultimate efficacy, incorporation of Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) into carbonate apatite (CA) structure was applied in this study. As a result, around three times higher loading efficiency for paclitaxel (Pac) was achieved via BSA utilization. Moreover, boosted efficacy in limiting the viability of cancer cells in the culture and also tumor growth in animals was achieved following administration of BSA-embedded CA complexed with paclitaxel compared to CA/Pac. Taken together, with favorable drug binding and in vivo efficacy, BSA incorporated carbonate apatite could be engineered into a high potency nano-carrier with extensive application in upcoming research.
