Contraceptive use and commodity costs in developing countries 1994-2005.

1994
In order to update global estimates of contraceptive requirements for use by participants at the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development the findings reported in the UN Population Funds (UNFPA) "Contraceptive Requirements and Demand for Contraceptive Commodities in Developing Countries in the 1990s" were revised to incorporate the latest data from sources such as the UN the Demographic and Health Surveys and the in-depth country studies of the UNFPAs Global Initiative. The methodology applied to create the estimates is described and details are given for the 4-stage preparation of the projections. The methodological discussion provides information on types and sources of data used for the projections (required data estimates of baseline levels of contraceptive prevalence estimates of contraceptive method used and estimates from governments) and on unmet need as a basis for the projection of contraceptive prevalence (predicting and projecting prevalence). The third chapter presents estimates and projections of contraceptive usage. Estimates of contraceptive usage among married women of reproductive age (MWRA) depend upon population growth in 1994-2005 and the contraceptive prevalence rate in 1994. This information is presented in tabular and textual form as is information on contraceptive method mix contraceptive usage among all women and estimates and projections of annual acceptors of contraceptives. There is no fourth chapter in this report. The fifth chapter covers estimates and projections of contraceptive commodity requirements and costs. Accompanying tables present this information by method by cost if purchased on the international market (by method) the number of annual acceptors users and costs associated with having 1% of MWRA using Norplant. The sixth chapter details sources of supply with tabular information on estimated sources of supply of modern methods in developing countries by method and by region in 1994 and nonusers of modern methods and costs in 1994 and 2005. The final chapter presents condom projections for sexually transmitted disease and HIV/AIDS prevention. The first appendix contains estimates of costs for sterilization commodities and the last appendix has 26 additional tables.
