What Is Androgyny

1978
Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1978, Vol 23(5), 328–330. Reviews the book, Women: A Psychological Perspective edited by Elaine Donelson and Jeanne E. Gullaborn (1977). As authors recognize, psychology texts on women in the late 1970s are delayed reactions to embarrassing questions raised over a decade earlier by a reawakened woman's movement. The central issues reverberated with the sociology of knowledge, in this case. According to its editors, this volume aimed to be a “well-documented, solid psychology book” and to unite the varying perspectives of the nine contributors and their content areas through “preliminary” synthesis, to be interpreted as “heuristic prods” to the reader's thinking. The level and quality of writing throughout are appropriate for students with an introductory course. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
