A method in vitro for evaluating the risk of death within one year for a subject, the method comprising: determining a level of ST2 in a test sample from a subject; and comparing the level in the test sample with a reference level of ST2, wherein the level of ST2 in the sample compared to the reference level indicates the risk of death of the subject within a specified period of a year.
