Executive summary and presentation synopsis

2005
With 155,000 post offices, India Post is the largest post office in the world, and it has a value well beyond that of a postal and savings outlet for India's people. But with its core business activity of postal services in decline and with recurring operating losses, India Post faces great pressure to reduce costs, increase revenue and operate on a far more commercial basis. This paper includes an executive summary and a presentation synopsis of the Seminar on Transformation of India Post for Vision 2020 (June 15-16, 2005). The executive summary includes goals and structure of the seminar, sector policy, universal service obligation, market liberalization and regulation, restructuring of India Post to deliver efficient services, key operational issues, and next steps. The presentation synopsis includes an opening and overview of India Post, restructuring and modernization experiences, delivery of services and key enablers, and action plan and closing.
