The improved stratospheric and mesospheric sounder on UARS

The Improved Stratospheric and Mesospheric Sounder (ISAMS) experiment measures atmospheric temperature and composition profiles from the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite. This paper describes the instrument and its performance in relation to the scientific objectives, with emphasis on innovative aspects of the measurement technique.
