In this study a typical bridge with Π-type pier columns for substructure is selected and the determination of substructure and connections is carried out in the preliminary design step for the verification of earthquake resistant capacity. For typical bridges using steel bearings pier column section is to be determined by way of trial and error method for the first step. Because Π-type pier behaves as two single columns in the longitudinal direction and as a rahmen structures in the transverse direction, different response modification factors should be applied. The conventional procedure where steel bearing capacity should be decided afterwards to provide the ductile failure mechanism is modified such that all possible pier column sections are included in the design and design alternatives can be provided
