At present, research concerning pellet manufacturing is incomplete. The typical properties of pellets, like mechanical stability, friction conditions, rheological properties, relationships of stress and deformation still give rise to many questions for researchers today, because of the complexity of the structure of wood. According to the literature, the mechanical stability of pellets is related to the lignin and the adhesion forces. The present work examines the possible origins of the binding forces and experimental evidence shows that the presence of water on particle surfaces plays a definite role during the pressing procedure.
