The invention relates to a method for winding the running thread at a workstation of a Spinnspul- or a winding machine, which is wound yarn withdrawn from a source and to a winding package (4). After yarn breaks, the yarn end from the winding package (4) is unwound, the yarn connection between the thread source and the winding package (4) is restored and the winding continued when a tolerable yarn joint is present. Upon the occurrence of a yarn interruption since the last thread connecting wound yarn amount is determined. If the wound after the restart of the winding after the last thread connecting yarn amount has not already reached a predetermined amount of yarn as much yarn from the package (4) is unwound and separated, that the last tolerated thread joint is located in the separated section of thread. This leads to an improvement in optical quality of the textile end product.
