Efficacy of Ethanolic extract of Solanum incanum fruit extract for its antimicrobial activity

2014
Plants have been an important source of medicine for thousands of years. Drugs may be obtained from various parts of the plant. So, an extensive study is required to detect the medical properties of the plant. Several medicinal plants have been tried against pathogenic microorganisms. The present study is to evaluate antibacterial activity of Solanum incanum fruit. The ethanolic extract of Solanum incanum fruit was used for analysis of minimum inhibitory concentration and zone of inhibition against gram positive and gram negative organisms such as Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella paratypi, Vibreo cholera. Kirby-Bauer procedure was used for analysis and the cultures are grown in Muller -Hinton agar. From this study it was concluded that the MIC of Solanum incanum fruit aginst Staphylococcus aureus ,Pseudomonas aeruginosa ,Salmonella paratypi and Vibreo cholera were found to be 500µg/ml and that for bacillus subtilis was found to be 250µg/ml and the zone of inhibition shown by the ethanol extract ranged from 10-26mm,at a concentration of 100µg/disc.
