Comparison of Corrosion Behavior between A6063/Al2O3 and AA6082/Al2O3 Composites at Marine Conditions

2016
Aluminum alloys belongs to 6XXX series are used as construction material in various fields such as automotive, marine, power, and aerospace Aluminum is mostly used in ship building due to properties such as light weight and high resistance to corrosion. A light weight ship offers greater performance thereby reducing the fuel consumption and increased speeds. In this research work, two different aluminums matrix composites namely AA6063/Al2O3 and AA6082/Al2O3 are fabricated using two-step stir casting process. The corrosion behavior of the above two materials were observed with the help of mass loss techniques and electrochemical methods. The intention of this analysis is to evaluate the corrosion resistance performance patterns of the materials in NaCl medium for 30 days duration. These results are validated by measuring the corrosion rate using potentiostatic polarization techniques. It was observed that the resistance to corrosion is more in AA6082/Al2O3 as compared to AA6063/Al2O3
