Conversion of Electrical Energy into Life Energy

Focusing on the fact that the essence of respiration performed by living organisms is the delivery of electrons, we have developed an electrochemical cultivation method for cultivating microorganisms using redox materials generated by electrode reactions. The electrochemical cultivation method is considered to be effective for high-density cultivation of microorganisms and acquisition of previously uncultured environmental microorganisms. Here, potential control that should be taken care of when performing the electrochemical cultivation and the basic configuration of an apparatus are introduced. In addition, examples of microbial cultivation using this method are shown.
