An overview of the existing carbon capture, utilization, and storage projects in Asia: Comparing policy choices and their consequences for sustainable development

2021
Abstract This chapter provides an overview of the current carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) projects and prospects in Asia. It starts by analyzing Asian countries’ energy mixes and CO2 emissions, and discusses the continued reliance on fossil fuels and increasing energy demand. Further, opportunities and barriers to CCUS commercial-scale deployment in China, Japan, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, and India are identified and discussed. Finally, the chapter concludes by addressing the challenges of an absent CCUS regulatory regime and raises the lessons learned from comparative experiences.
