Metagenomic Insights on the Role of Gut Microbiota in Type-2 Diabetes

Gut microbiota is intrinsically linked to modulation of physiological behavior of the host in both health and disease. The microDiab project, implemented at "Stefan cel Mare" University in Suceava, Romania has, as one of its objectives, the characterization of the gut microbiome in type-2 diabetic patients using high throughput metagenomic sequencing technologies. Microbiota of placebo and probiotic-treated patients was sequenced using 16S rRNA metagenomics on Next Generation Sequencing platform. Preliminary results indicate differences in gut microbiota composition profile across treatments and points to the importance of this community of microorganisms in type-2 diabetes mellitus.
