Introduced into clinical practice over 25 years ago, beta blockers are now widely used in the treatment of various disorders, including hypertension, ischemic heart disease, and cardiomyopathies. Despite the proven benefits of beta blocking agents, their use results in a disturbance of lipoprotein metabolism. Some researchers have associated these lipoprotein changes with an increased risk of developing or exacerbating coronary atherosclerosis
