Sex and age of patients with multiple aneurysms of cerebral blood vessels

The aim of this study was to determine the sex and age distributions of patients with multiple aneurysms, to obtain new data which might be useful in investigating the aetiology of multiple aneurysms. The study included 72 patients in whom multiple intracranial aneurysms were revealed angiographically by standard Seldinger’s method and digital subtraction angiography. The patients were divided into three groups according to the number of aneurysms. The first group included 39 women (average age 45.9 ± 11.8 years) and 14 men (average age 44.4 ±9.7 years). The second group comprised 8 women (average age 39.6 ±3.7 years) and 5 men (average age 49.4 ±7.2 years) and the third 4 women (average age 47.5 ±10.3 years) and 2 men (average age 40.5 ±2.7 years). The female-to-male ratio did not significantly differ among the groups. There was no significant difference between the average ages of men and women in the first and third groups. In the second group, however, the women were significantly younger than the men (P<0.02). The observation that women with three aneurysms are significantly younger than similarly afflicted men, calls for investigation of sex and age factors.
