USO DO SOLO E TEMPERATURA SUPERFICIAL EM ÁREA URBANA between land use and land cover and superfi cial temperature in urban areas

2011
This study focuses on the surface urban heat island and the spatio-temporal relationship between land use and surface temperatures (Ts) for the city of Varzea Grande, State of Mato Grosso, Brasil. The Cuiaba and Varzea Grande city together became one of the major urban agglomerations of central-western Brazil and suffered intense processes urbanization since the 1960s. Multispectral Landsat-5 TM satellite imagery was used to elaborate maps of land use and cover and surface temperatures (Ts) and surface urban heat islands were detected the in the Varzea Grande’s downtown, but it cannot be considerate a consolidated phenomenon. Highest Ts values were found in open soil (2.0°C) and urbanized areas (2.13°C). In order to reduce Ts, it is recommended to review urban indexes, and promote actions to preserve reminiscent vegetation, introduce green areas in strategic position in the city and utilize alternative materials that reduce the energy storage like cool paving and cool roofs.
