Prevalence of bovine subclinical mastitis in organized farms in and around Bangalore, based on liquid phase blocking ELISA

2013
The present study was taken up to determine the prevalence of subclinical mastitis among dairy cows in five organized farms located at various geographic locations in and around Bangalore, based on liquid phase blocking enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (LPB ELISA). Two hundred thirty nine apparently healthy cows from five organized farms were grouped based on the breed, age and number of lactations. Milk samples were collected from each of these animals and subjected to LPB ELISA. Prevalence of SCM was determined for each breed, age group and lactation. Prevalence of SCM indairy cows was high in HF(24.47%) and Jersey (20.59%) cross breeds as compared to the local Sahiwal breed (12.50%). The percentage prevalence of SCM increased with the increase in theage of the cows and was highest in dairy cows aged eight years and above (25.86%). In the current study the prevalence of SCM was lowest in the first lactation (19.72%) and increased with the increase in the number of lactation. Highest percentage prevalence of SCM was noticedin fourth lactation (32.14%).
