Seroepidemiological survey of HIV-1 and HIV-2 infections in the five regions of Ivory Coast.

1991
4899 healthy adults aged 15-65 from Abidjan Ivory Coast were randomly selected by a cluster-sampling method and their sera were tested for HIV-1 and HIV-2 by ELISA assays. The ELISAs were Elavia-1 and Elavia-2 Diagnostics Pasteur Marnes-la-Coquette France. Positive sera were retested by Western blot HIV-1 blot Biorad USA and LAV blot-2 Diagnostics Pasteur. Those with 2 or more envelope antibodies were considered positive. Sera were confirmed positive for both viruses with the PEPTILAV 1 and 2 Diagnostics Pasteur. Total crude prevalence rates ranged from 2.2% in the north to 8.3% in the south. Prevalence in urban areas ranged from 6.0-8.3%. Prevalence was higher in men than women and peaked in 20-29 year olds. HIV-1 infections predominated in all regions following prior trends. There were 33 doubly positive sera.
