Conversations that Inspire: Coaching and Positive Emotions

Coaching has emerged as an increasingly popular and effective way to build leadership capability within organizations through one-on-one helping relationships. The growth of coaching practice has outpaced research, necessitating that scientists and practitioners look to complementary fields to expand their knowledge. One such field is positive psychology and specifically, the study of positive emotions. We contend that positive emotions shape the coaching interaction, fueling the cognitive, physiological and relational resources necessary to encourage and sustain a client’s growth and development agenda. This panel symposium seeks to integrate research on positive emotions and coaching by bringing together scholars whose research informs helping relationships through a positive psychological lens. Using the popular Mind-Body-Spirit framework, prominent scholars will present research ideas and perspectives on diverse coaching arenas.
