Shear wave properties of marine sediments derived from cepstral analysis of background noise

1988
Cepstral analysis of background noise recorded on a horizontal borehole seismometer in the northwest Pacific reveals strong cepstral peaks corresponding to shear wave reverberation in the marine sediments. Shear reverberation intervals in the marine sediments derived from the cepstral analysis are within 10% of results obtained from a detailed analysis of seismic refraction profiling at the site. The close correspondence between the cepstral analysis and seismic profile analysis results are indicative that cepstral analysis is a useful tool in measuring and constraining marine sediment properties.
