Estimation of the volume of sea ice in the Arctic Ocean taking pressure ridges into account

Abstract The author proposes a new method for calculating the volume of pressure ridges, based on determining the surplus mass of ice resulting from ice drift movements. On this basis a new assessment of the ice volume in the Arctic Ocean has been attempted, taking the volume of pressure ice into account. The results reveal considerable spatial variations in the total volume of ice and in the percentage share of pressure ice, both in time and space.
